A celebration of Eunice’s life will be held Saturday January 27th at 2 pm at Rader Funeral Home. Eunice will be interned at Lakeview Memorial Gardens, Longview Texas with a private family service.

Eunice was born on January 12th, 1928 in Reyno, Arkansas to Irvin and Bertha Sutton. Shortly after, the family moved to Tipton Oklahoma, where Eunice graduated from high school and developed a group of friends that would continue to this day. In 1944, Eunice and her Mother, moved to Phoenix Arizona, where Eunice would meet Thomas Harold Spurlock on a Sunday in February 1946. Harold was home on leave from Camp Huaneme. It was love at first sight. They were married on August 17th, 1946 in Buckeye Arizona after Harold was discharged from the Navy following the end of World War II.

Harold and Eunice shared a strong love of God. After living several years in Phoenix, they both wanted a life of serving others. They moved to Kilgore in 1963 where Harold became the Minister of Henderson Boulevard Church and later the Martin Street Congregation. Eunice was always his companion during these new opportunities. She gave selflessly of herself, raising four children, teaching many Sunday school bible classes, volunteering in many civic organizations and later working for the Kilgore Independent School District.

In the early 1970’s, Harold along with Floyd Addington and Robert Hall, of Jasper Texas acquired the KTXJ AM/FM. Harold and Eunice used this forum to further their ministry of sharing and leading others to a Christian way of life.

After the passing of Harold, Eunice became very busy with grandchildren, quilting with friends, attending her favorite sport of water exercises, and making Teddy Bears for Roy H. Laird Hospital. She also loved her days of volunteering at the East Texas Oil Museum. She would always direct the visitors to the portion of the Museum where Harold’s hair had been collected in the barber shop and on permanent display in the Museum.

In 2008, after 44 years in her beloved Kilgore, she moved to Temple and later Rosebud to be closer to her family and grandchildren. She continued to service to others in Temple by sewing “OUCH BUDDIES “ for McLane Childrens Hospital. Her many stitches found their way into so many beautiful quilts, pillows, clothes. Eunice left a legacy of love and a constant desire to serve friends, strangers, family and God during her time on earth.

She is survived by four children, Janice Spurlock Ballard and her husband Frankie, of Rosebud Texas; Mark Spurlock of Abilene Texas; Sharon Spurlock Lightfoot and her husband Tim, of Temple Texas and Vern Spurlock and his wife Carol of Fort Worth Texas; eight grandchildren, Brad Ballard and his wife, Amy of Rosebud, Beau Ballard and his wife, Erica of Robinson, Texas, Crystal Ballard of Corpus Christi, Texas, Stephanie Spurlock of Denver, Colorado, Emily Spurlock Barnes and her husband, Josh of Richardson, Texas, Audrey Lorea Thweatt of New York, New York, Caroline A. Lamsens and her husband, Frank of Fort Worth, Alexander V. Corpening and his wife, Megan of Fort Worth; ten great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Bella Ballard, Elijah, Sadie and Jack Ballard, Claire and Carolyn Barnes Charlotte Ann and Theodore Thomas Lamsens, Isabel Grace Corpening.

Eunice was preceded in death by her husband, Harold in September 1989, her sister Janelle Tomlin in 1994 and her daughter- in- law Jo Carol Spurlock in November of 2013.

The family would like to especially thank and acknowledge the caregivers that assisted with her care over the past few years as her health declined. A special debt of gratitude is owed to Zerlentra Moore and Tameka Truesdale. Their unwavering passion, kind spirit and love for Eunice was evident each day.

The family is also grateful to the nurses and physicians of Baylor Scott and White in Temple for their professional and loving spirit over the past few weeks. In Lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Mission Fund at Chandler Church of Christ, Kilgore Texas or the charity of your choice.
