John William Wylie was born July 19, 1945, in Kilgore, Texas, to John Buckner and Helen Langford Wylie. Bill was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kilgore, where he also served as a deacon. On January 19, 1961, Bill went before the board of review of the Boy Scout Troop 265 and became an Eagle Scout. While at Kilgore High School, he was elected a member of the National Honor Society. A proud member of the 1963 graduating class of Kilgore High School, he then played football and earned a baccalaureate degree from Austin College in Sherman, Texas. Mr. Wylie served our country in the United States Army while stationed in Vietnam. After returning to Kilgore, Mr. Wylie furthered his education by earning his master’s degree in education from Stephen F. Austin State University. He became the department chair at Kilgore High School for history and government. Teaching at Kilgore High School, as his mother did before him, Bill helped shape the minds of countless young people during his 34-year teaching career and was often referred to as “My Favorite Teacher.” For over 30 years, on fall Friday nights, Bill proudly announced the Kilgore High School football games over the public-address system at R. E. St. John Stadium. While in the high school broadcast booth, you could almost hear his infectious smile, as he would inject the game score of the Austin College Fighting Kangaroos football team. Mr. Wylie will be missed by many.
