Guestbook | Print Obituary

Violet Hutchens Day, beloved matriarch of the Day family originally from Kilgore, passed away in Houston, TX, on Wednesday, September 20, 2017. Services at the graveside will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 23, 2017 in the Kilgore City Cemetery under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Kilgore.

Born in Ranger, Texas in 1929, she moved to Kilgore with her family while in grade school and attended Huey Elementary and Sabine High School in Liberty City. She attended Kilgore Jr. College and was a Rangerette in 1946.

In April 1947, she married H.W. “Dub” Day, of Kilgore, who was home on leave from the US Navy. Although Dub’s work in the oilfield moved them to various cities and states, Kilgore was always home for the Days. Violet was a stay-at home mother to three daughters, Sheryl, Suzy, and Cathey. Violet was active in their home church as a Sunday School teacher, Bible study leader, and pastor’s secretary. In 1970, the Days moved to Spring, TX, where Violet continued to live until her passing on Wednesday.

Violet worked until her retirement at the age of 75 for Lawrence Industries in Houston, where she was in international sales. She spent the last years of her life enjoying traveling and being with family.

Violet is preceded in death by her parents, Harry & Hazel Hutchens and her beloved husband “Dub” Day. She is survived by her brother, Harry Hutchens, Jr. of Houston; and sisters, Pauline Doege of Camden, Tennessee, and Barbara Roberts of Apple Valley, California. She is also survived by her three daughters, Sheryl Jeter of Spring; Suzanne Sneed of Kilgore; and Cathey Green of Houston; six grandchildren, Shayne Patterson of Denver, NC; Tripp Jeter of Hendersonville, NC; Kara Carter of Tomball, TX; Ashley Gaskins of Tomball; Colton Green of Houston; Bethany Cartmill of Katy, TX; Carina Heintz of Montgomery, TX; and Krystal Flores of Kilgore. She was Ninny to 22 great-grandchildren and one on-the-way, and beloved Aunt to two nieces and five nephews.

Violet dedicated herself to her family and leaves behind a beautiful legacy. She served the Lord every day of her life and raised her children and grandchildren to know the Lord from an early age. Although they mourn her passing, they know she is now made whole and enjoying the presence of the Lord
