Tommy Joe Smith, a beloved family man and dedicated worker, passed away on July 10, 2025, in Tyler, Texas, at the age of 75. Born on December 30, 1949, in Henderson, Texas, Tommy grew up immersed in the values of hard work and determination that would define his life. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, an experience that deeply shaped his character and instilled a strong sense of duty.
Throughout his life, Tommy found fulfillment in working with his hands, particularly in the realm of landscaping. His career was marked by a tireless commitment to creating beautiful spaces that resonated with nature, reflecting his love for the outdoors and the well-being it brought to others. A true craftsman, he took great pride in his work, knowing that each project brought joy to those around him.
Tommy was not just a man of skill; he was also a person of deep affection. He cherished his family and was known for his love of horses, which added to the richness of his life. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Dani Head Smith, of Tyler, who stood by him through life's many seasons. His legacy also includes his siblings: Calvin Smith of Liberty City, Linda Smitherman and her husband Jack of Liberty City, and Glenn Smith and his wife Linda of Liberty City. Additionally, Tommy is remembered fondly by his sister-in-law, Kay Lee, and her husband Gene of Jefferson, as well as by many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Preceding Tommy in death were his parents, Curtis Calvin and Queenie Wallace Smith, whose love and guidance laid the foundation for the man he became.
A visitation will be held at Bethel Baptist Church in Chapel Hill on Thursday, July 17, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at the same location at 11:00 AM, with burial following at the Williams Cemetery in Chapel Hill. His spirit lives on through the love of his family and friends, and he will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
