Services for Mrs. Tommie Jean Mumphrey, 74 of Kilgore will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, April 1, 2021 at the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home in Kilgore with Bro. Darryl Bowdre officiating. Entombment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Family will receive friends from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm, Thursday, April 1, 2021 at the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home in Kilgore.
Tommie Jean Mumphrey was born on September 26, 1946, in Laird Hill, TX to Tommy L. Sheffield and Margaret Mayberry. As a young child she lived with, and was raised by, her maternal aunt Mary Hendrix and her husband Moses.
Tommie accepted Christ at an early age and attended Westview Church of Christ until her health declined. She attended C.B. Dansby Colored High School where she was a majorette. She graduated from Kilgore College and attended University of Texas-Tyler. Having a servant’s heart, Tommie spent most of her career as a supervisor with the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, retiring after thirty years of serving the public.
Tommie’s interests included spending time with her family and cooking and baking with her grandchildren. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, affectionately called Lil Mama by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Tommie’s earthly journey came to an end on March 25, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents Tommy and Margaret, guardians Mary and Moses and great-grandson Cole Moore.
Tommie is survived by her husband of forty-eight years, Johnny Mumphrey, Sr.; daughters Ramona Bivins (Charlton), Pamela Thurman-Ford (JD), Anita Gonzalez; sons Dr. Johnny Mumphrey, Jr. (Nikita) and Adrian Mumphrey (Angelia); grandchildren, Steven Ashley, Jr.(Travonda), Krystal Ashley, Jonathan Franklin, Erica Thurman, Corey Thurman, Jazzmine Thurman, Joslyn Moore (Joshua), A’Kia Hargrove (Wayne), Xavia Mumphrey, Jason Ford, Alana Mumphrey, Chris Bates, Alex Mumphrey, Adrian Mumphrey, Jr. and Ayden Mumphrey; eleven great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Sanders and Ruth Hazel (Michael) Cook; and a host of other relatives and friends.
