Richard Edward Self

November 12, 1939 — July 16, 2025

Kilgore

Richard Edward Self, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2025, at his residence, surrounded by his cherished family. He was born on November 12, 1939, in Antelope, Texas, and has spent a lifetime creating beautiful memories with those he loved.

Richard dedicated much of his working life to the oil field as a contract pumper, a vocation that showcased his strong work ethic and deep respect from his peers. His family often accompanied him on trips to visit oil leases, where they witnessed firsthand the admiration others held for him. Such experiences instilled in them a sense of pride and respect for their father and grandfather, who approached life with a laid-back and easy-going demeanor.

An alumnus of Antelope High School, Richard proudly served four years in the Air Force, followed by two years in the reserves—a testament to his dedication and commitment to service. He fondly reminisced about his early days; the charm of his love story with Linda Kay (Youngblood) Self began at a grocery store and laundromat when Linda teasingly asked, "Does your wife not do your clothes?" Their chemistry blossomed quickly, leading to a loving marriage that spanned over 50 years, filled with laughter, support, and deep affection.

Richard's personality centered around family. He was very close to his siblings and extended family, valuing the time spent together over all else. Richard reveled in family weekends, looking forward to lively Easter celebrations and gathering for leisurely conversations. His hobbies included hunting and fishing, woodworking in his shop, and losing himself in the pages of western books. A lover of nature, he knew all the flowers and trees by name and often shared that knowledge with those around him.

As a devoted grandfather, Richard attended all of his grandchildren's events, providing them with unwavering encouragement and support. He enjoyed conversations with his daughter, Kristy, every night, and remained an ever-present figure in their lives, instilling in them his values of kindness and love.

His family, including wife Linda, son Scott (Danielle) Self, daughter Kristy (Bryan) Couch, and his cherished grandchildren—Hunter Self, Richard Self, Jordyn (Coy) Gonzales, Blake Couch, Halie (Bryar) Jones, Cash Couch, and Rikki Couch. Mother to Hunter and Richard, Tammy Vining—along with his great-grandchildren, Lendyn Self, Trace Gonzales, and Teagan Gonzales, will forever hold his memories in their hearts. Richard is also survived by his dear sisters, Marie (Ron) Cafagna, Joyce Tilghman, and Patsy Self.

Richard joins in eternity his mother, Viola Whitsett; father, Steven "S.L." Self; father, Erno Woody, who raised Richard and his four siblings as his own children. Richard's brother, Charles Self; brother-in-law, Walter Tilghman; sister-in-law, Linda Self; and great-grandson, Rylan Self, all of whom he loved and cherished deeply.

The visitation will be held at Rader Funeral Home in Kilgore, TX, on Monday, July 21, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, followed by a funeral service on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM. He will be laid to rest at Danville Cemetery in Kilgore.

Richard Edward Self was a gentle soul whose legacy of love and laughter will continue to shine brightly through his family and friends. His spirit will be dearly missed but cherished in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
