Rexine Carlisle Burden

November 5, 1927 — October 24, 2022

Private family services for Rexine Carlisle Burden, 94, of Kilgore will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2022, under the direction of Rader Funeral Home in Kilgore with Reverend Will Wilson of the First Presbyterian Church of Kilgore officiating. Interment will be at Danville Cemetery. Rexine went to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, October 24, 2022.


Rexine was born on November 5, 1927, in Spur, Texas to Eunice Morris and Isaac Rex Carlisle. Her early years were spent in the Houston area until her family relocated to Buras, LA, when she was twelve. After completing school, Rexine was employed by a division of Gulf Oil. In 1946, Rexine met her future husband, Roy J. Burden, Jr. The couple had a whirlwind six-week courtship and were happily married for 75 years until Roy’s passing in 2021. Rexine and Roy lived in South, West, and East Texas over the years making lifelong friendships along the way. Roy retired from Gulf Oil in 1984 and the couple lived in Brownwood until eventually moving to Kilgore to be closer to family in 2000.


Rexine was lovingly known as “Big Mama” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A long-time member of Eastern Star, Rexine served as Worthy Matron during her time in the Brownwood chapter. She was also an active church member over the years, serving as a Sunday School teacher and working with youth and young adults. As a member of First Presbyterian Church of Kilgore, she enjoyed being part of Presbyterian Women and Kilgore Church Women. Rexine was a dedicated volunteer, the ultimate homemaker, and a truly gifted seamstress who loved all things involving sewing. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband and close friends.


Family members who have preceded Rexine in death include her parents and husband Also a sister, Mafoi Carlisle Bogitsh, two brothers, Marvin Rex Carlisle and Dr. Paul Dee Archie, and son-in-law, Dr. Bronte D. Baker.


Rexine is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Royce and Larry Moss of Bonham, Joyce Baker, and Denise and Michael McMillan of Kilgore; grandchildren Travis Moss (Karen) of Houston; Brandy McMillan Brannon (Jason) and Wendy McMillan Robuck (Chris) of Kilgore; Sara Moss Green (Aaron) of McKinney; Jeb Baker of Conroe; Darrin Baker of Las Vegas, NV; Jarrod Moss (Katrina) of Sherman; and 20 great-grandchildren. Additional survivors included three sisters, Marian Carlisle Roberson and Twila Carlisle Key, both of Spur, and Shawnee Carlisle Blancet of Wolfforth, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to those who have been caregivers to Rexine for the past several years including Dr. Surya Lanka, the staff of Arbor Grace, and Heart to Heart Hospice.
