Joseph Ronald Turner, better known as "J.R.", a cherished family man and dedicated professional, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025, in Tyler, Texas. Born on July 5, 1944, in Idabell, Oklahoma, J.R. lived a life rich in accomplishments and memories that will forever resonate with those who knew him.
As a proud Vietnam veteran, he served in the Army, embodying a commitment to his country that he carried throughout his life. J.R.'s career was a testament to his work ethic; he began as a business manager, built airplanes for Lockheed Martin, and later transitioned into truck driving, where he traversed over a million miles before retiring, a reflection not only of his skill behind the wheel but also of his meticulous nature and commitment to getting the job done right.
Those who loved J.R. will remember him for his laid-back personality, organization skills, and perhaps most importantly, his immense love for his family. He shared a beautiful life with his wife, Joyce Padgett Turner, whom he met while truck driving—a partnership built on mutual respect and endless love over their remarkable 28 years together. Their bond was a prime example of devotion that inspired all who witnessed it.
J.R. took great pride in his role as a father to his children, Wayne Turner, Kim Preston, Charity Cabe, and Aaron Hubbard. He was a beacon of support and guidance, always striving to create lasting memories with his family. J.R.’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in his heart; they lovingly called him "Papa," a name that symbolized the warmth and affection he generously shared. His family will forever treasure the countless moments spent fishing, working outside, and enjoying their time together, always accompanied by a warm smile and a loving demeanor.
J.R. was meticulous about even the smallest details, often jokingly expressing his disdain for soft peaches that could be thrown and not cause harm. His organizational skills extended beyond his work to his home, as he always had a keen eye for order and structure. Friends and family often marveled at his ability to know exactly when something had been moved from its rightful place—a small yet endearing quirk that painted a vivid picture of his character.
His love for life extended to simple pleasures; he enjoyed fishing and spending time outdoors and found joy in unwinding with his favorite show, NCIS. Each moment epitomized his laid-back approach to life, balanced with a natural curiosity and desire to engage meaningfully with both nature and people.
J.R. is preceded in death by both of his parents, Mildred Murdock and Hugh Turner, and his sister, Carolyn Griffin, who will be lovingly remembered alongside him.
A funeral service to honor J.R. will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 10:00 am at Rader Funeral Home in Kilgore, Texas. This gathering will allow family and friends to come together to celebrate the life of a remarkable man whose presence greatly enriched the lives of all who knew him.
