Obituary

John Allen Lewis, 49, of Kilgore, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2026, at MD Anderson Cancer Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Surrounded by the love of his family, John faced his journey with the same strength, determination, and faith that defined his life.

John was born on January 6, 1977, in Houston, Texas, to William and Debbie Lewis of Kilgore. He graduated from Kilgore High School with the Class of 1996, where he excelled in both baseball and football and began forming the lifelong friendships that he treasured throughout his life.

Following high school, John attended Lon Morris College, where he continued his baseball career before earning his degree from Sam Houston State University in 2001. His passion for mentoring young people led him into coaching, where he spent three years inspiring student-athletes, including two years at Chapel Hill ISD. He was also a member of the Kilgore High School coaching staff in 2004 when the Bulldogs captured the state championship.

John dedicated his professional life to the students at Kilgore High School, where he taught Career and Technical Education Construction. He was far more than a teacher. He was a mentor, role model, and steadfast advocate for his students. Known as a dedicated Bulldog and proud Aggie Dad, he believed deeply in the potential of every student who walked through his classroom doors. His influence extended far beyond academics, shaping lives through encouragement, integrity, and genuine care.

In 2002, John married the love of his life, Misty Medford Lewis. Their story began years earlier when they dated during John's senior year and Misty's junior year at Kilgore High School. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and the daughters they adored.

Of all the roles John held, none was more important to him than being a father. He was the ultimate dance dad, faithfully supporting Kyleigh Jayne Lewis, born in 2007, and Alyssa Kate Lewis, born in 2011, in every endeavor. Whether attending events, cheering from the sidelines, or simply making memories at home, his girls were the center of his world.

John had a passion for the outdoors and cherished every opportunity to hunt, fish, and spend time with family and friends. An avid angler, he especially enjoyed bass fishing and proudly supported the Ultimate High School Fishing program and was the sponsor of the Kilgore High School Fishing Team. He loved deer hunting, gathering around a grill, and sharing stories with those he loved.

A devoted Texas A&M supporter, John was a proud Aggie Dad who rarely missed an opportunity to yell for Aggie football. He also had a fun-loving side that endeared him to everyone around him. He loved musicals, and one of his favorite traditions was watching Pitch Perfect with his daughters and their friends. His favorite Disney character was Mary Poppins, a fitting reflection of his optimism, kindness, and ability to bring joy to those around him.

John is survived by his wife, Misty Medford Lewis; his daughters, Kyleigh Jayne Lewis and Alyssa Kate Lewis; his parents, William and Debbie Lewis of Kilgore; his brother, Sam Lewis and wife Sandi of Kilgore; niece and nephews Hailee and husband David Amaro, Hunter Lewis, Harper Lewis, Jenna Lewis, and Kelsey Lewis; his brother-in-law, Michael Medford and wife Julie of Tyler; his nephew, Barrett Medford; his parents-in-law, Jerry and Peggy Medford; and his grandmother, Hulean Finkbeiner of Orange.

Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Rader Funeral Home in Kilgore. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Glenn Young. Interment will follow at Danville Cemetery.

Though cancer may have ended John's earthly journey, it could never diminish the impact of his life. His legacy will live on in every student he taught, every athlete he coached, every friend he encouraged, and every family member he loved so deeply. He will be remembered for his courage, his unwavering commitment to his girls, his servant's heart, and the countless lives he changed for the better.

"A life measured not by years, but by the difference made in the lives of others." John Allen Lewis lived such a life, and his memory will remain a blessing to all who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial donations or gifts be made to an account established for John's daughters, Kyleigh and Alyssa. Contributions may be made at VeraBank, c/o Misty Lewis. The family is deeply grateful for the love, support, prayers, and generosity shown during this difficult time, and they know John would be honored by any gift that helps support the future of his beloved girls.
