James Nicholas Smithey, known warmly to his Key's family as James, his Texas family as Nick and others as just Tejas, was a man who painted his life with the vivid hues of artistry, passion, and relentless mastery. Born on a crisp Christmas Eve in 1979, in the heart of Longview, Texas, he entered the world with a spark destined to illuminate every path he trod. From his earliest days, the walls of his youth echoed with melodies plucked from instruments he could summon to life with effortless grace, and sketches born from a boundless imagination that promised a lifetime dedicated to creativity.
A graduate of Longview High School, James’s journey was marked by a rare blend of talents that transcended convention. He could wrap a car as deftly as he could curate a menu in the kitchen or shake a cocktail behind any bar with the flair of a seasoned artist. His career wove through realms as diverse as graphic design and culinary arts, each a canvas for his boundless spirit. Those who knew him witnessed a man who could master any trade he set his mind to much like a sculptor shaping life’s clay into beautiful forms.
Yet James's artistry was not confined to earthly endeavors alone. In reverence to duty, he served honorably in both the Army and Navy from 1997 until 2006, a testament to his steadfast courage and commitment. Beyond these roles, he was a world traveler, his heart drawn to cultures and landscapes that the world unfurled before him. Each journey was another stanza in the symphony of his life, each place another shade in his ever-expanding palette.
His deep love for art and music was matched only by the warmth he radiated toward those closest to him; his wife, Shannon Smithey-his travel companion whom he loved with an undying devotion, children; Steven, Eryn, Abraham, Danny, Kaden, Shaun, and Olivia. His sisters; Cheri Wall, Lydia Rathbun, and Brittany Smithey, Claudia Nessmith and Angel Nelson along with his devoted mother, Pamela Loritsch, and his cherished fur children; Marty, Mr. Bateman, and Aris. Each family member adding their unique gentle whispers of comfort to a life so fully lived. The shadow of loss touches this circle as well, with the passing of his father, Mike Smithey, a poignant note in the melody of family.
On April 24, 2026, in the familiar embrace of Longview, Texas, James Nicholas Smithey’s vibrant journey gracefully came to a close. Yet, like any true work of art, his spirit does not vanish but lingers in every canvas, every lyric, and every soul he touched.
Friends, family, and admirers are invited to gather for visitation on April 29, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with Military Honors at 5:30 p.m., both at the Rader Funeral Home located at 401 N Martin St, Kilgore, Texas.
James Nicholas Smithey’s life was a masterpiece, a radiant constellation of artistic brilliance, skilled hands, and a heart wide enough to hold the world. His absence leaves a silence that sings of all he was and all he dreamed to be. Yet within that silence, his voice plays on as an eternal refrain of creativity, love, and the enduring human spirit.
