Obituary

James Darnell Freeman, born on May 19, 1956, in Overton, passed away on June 15, 2026. He lived a full life marked by hard work, humor, and deep love for his family and friends. James was raised by his parents, Betty and Cecil Freeman. He strutted across the graduation stage at Kilgore High School in 1974 and worked a short time at Lone Star Steel and in the oilfield industry, before dedicating most of his life working as a residential painting contractor in the Kilgore area, a job he claimed to dislike but always said, " I'm the best there is." His longtime customers would agree with him. Known for his sharp sense of humor, James enjoyed playing practical jokes on friends, always bringing laughter to those around him.

He was a loyal husband, loving father, proud "Pop" to his grandchildren, caring brother, devoted uncle, and trusted friend. His family and friends meant everything to him. A fan of the Texas Longhorns and Houston Astros, James found joy in sports, fishing, golf, horse racing, and entertaining guests at home. He was always ready for a trip to the boats. James was preceded in death by his parents, Betty and Cecil Freeman, sister Shay Freeman, brothers-in-law James Reed and Alan Faber, and his father-in-law Albert Faber. He is survived by his loving wife Susan, whom he met at the Big Bass Classic and often said she won the grand prize that year. Their daughter Jamie McKinney and her husband Jason live in Bossier City, Louisiana. Their son Jeff Freeman and his wife Megan reside in Dallas, Texas. James took great pride in his grandchildren: Alex, Allie, Add, Ace, and Arrow McKinney, as well as Parker, Piper, and Porter Freeman. James also leaves behind his brother Don Freeman and Don’s partner Henry Hodges and his mother-in-law Clara Faber. His brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law include Kyle and Karen Faber, Beverly Faber, Linda and Rob Platt, Glenn and Dachelle Faber, Steve and Gina Faber, Gordon Faber, Chaz Faber, and Daniel Faber. Numerous nieces and nephews were also part of his extended family. He cherished lifelong friendships with Sandi and Ronnie Moore, and Philip and Robin Avance.
