Charles Linvel Gillis, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2025, in Tyler, Texas at the age of 82. Born on April 19, 1943, in Nacogdoches, Texas, Charles lived a life defined by his dedication to work, faith, and family.
For five decades, Charles made significant contributions to LeBus International, where he ultimately retired as Plant Manager. His strong work ethic mirrored his character; he was a hardworking individual who committed himself wholeheartedly to his responsibilities, both professionally and personally. Charles was not only admired for his work but also for the values he imparted to those around him.
A devout Christian, Charles was an active member of Laird Hill Baptist Church. He served faithfully as a Deacon and was known for his leadership and generosity. He was particularly proud of his 23 years as Treasurer at Crims Chapel Baptist Church, where he also contributed by teaching Sunday School. His service extended to Highland Park Baptist Church and Forest Home Baptist Church, where he continued to embody the principles of faith that guided him throughout life.
In addition to his professional achievements and dedication to his church, Charles enjoyed a variety of hobbies that kept him fulfilled. He cherished the time spent fishing, working on his land, and tending to his cattle, which reflected his connection to nature and rural life. Above all else, Charles loved his family deeply, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the joy of his life.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Virginia Ruth Gillis; his daughters Regina Lee Ward and husband Joe, and Carol Annette Chambless and husband James; his brother, Jimmy Dwight Gillis and wife Mary; his sister, Linda Elizabeth Cobb; and his grandchildren Paige Bing and husband Rich, Blake Chambless and wife Lauren, Taylor Swafford and husband Kyle, and Trent Ward and wife Nichole. Charles also took immense pride in his great-grandchildren: Kaden Morrison, Kohen Bing, Kambrie Chambless, Hallie Chambless, Elise Swafford, Clay Swafford and Joseph Swafford.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester Willie Gillis and Novis Griffin Lunsford Gillis, and his sister, Sherry Nell Pledger.
A visitation will be held on July 23, 2025, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Rader Funeral Home in Kilgore. A Celebration of Life will follow on July 24, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Laird Hill Baptist Church, with interment following at Crims Chapel Cemetery in Henderson.
Charles Linvel Gillis will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to family, community, and faith. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched and the love he fostered within his family.
