Joy Louise Cheshire - Stengele

September 21, 1925 — December 8, 2022

Joy Louise Cheshire Stengele, 97, of Kilgore completed her earthly journey on Thursday, December 8, 2022, in Henderson. Graveside services will be held on Monday, December 12, 2022, at two o’clock in the afternoon at Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Longview.


Joy was born on September 21, 1925, in Mexia, Texas, to Sherman and Ester Cross. She moved to Salem, Illinois in 1935 where she attended school. Joy graduated from Salem High School in 1942. After school she married Bill Cheshire in 1943. They returned to Kilgore in 1960 and owned and operated a home and auto store named White’s Auto until their retirement in 1980. Joy volunteered at East Texas Treatment Center and Kilgore Crisis Center for numerous years. After the passing of her first husband Joy married Royce Stengele, and they shared many joyful years together. Joy was a dedicated Christian and a member of Kilgore Bible Church for many years. She adored animals especially cats. Joy enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels along with crocheting. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend. She will be truly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.


Left to cherish her memory are her second husband Royce Stengele of Kilgore, daughter Cheryl Procell and husband Johnny of Kilgore, sister Rebecca Sue Cross of Oregon, grandchildren, John David Cheshire and Jessie of Kilgore, Marcia Platt and Randy of Kilgore, Stephanie Nelson and Jim of Hughes Springs, Robby Procell of Kilgore, Lauren Cheshire of Ohio, Sandra Compton of Tennessee, six great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.


Joy was reunited with her first husband of 47 years Bill Cheshire, son United States Marine Corp. William Cheshire, son Clay Cheshire, brother Tom Cross, and her parents.
