Guy Willard Oliphint, of Kilgore, Texas, passed away on November 10, 2019 at the age of 97. Guy was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Billie Sula Oliphint, his parents, George and Emma Oliphint, a sister and five brothers. Guy is survived by three children, five grandchildren, and six great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Guy was born on January 31, 1922, in Hemphill, Texas. He moved with his family to South Houston, Texas, in 1938, graduating from Pasadena High School in 1939. Following graduation he attended Pan American University in McAllen, Texas. He entered the U.S. Merchant Marine service during World War II, serving as an engineer, and in 1945 was commissioned as Ensign. During, and after the war, the ships he served on made many trips across the Atlantic and Pacific to ports in England, Germany, North Africa, and China.
Returning to South Houston after the war, he married Willye Mae (Billie) Sula and had a daughter and two sons. He began working at Union Carbide in Texas City, Texas and retired after 32 years of service. He and Billie made many lifelong friends and enjoyed traveling and staying in touch with them through the years.
Guy enjoyed retirement in New London and Kilgore with his wife Billie, hosting visits from friends, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was a great example and mentor for his children and grandchildren.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and will always be remembered for his kindness, his patience, his wisdom and his incredible generosity.
The family would like to thank the staff of Elite Private Care of Longview, Arabella of Kilgore and Heart to Heart hospice for all the loving care they gave Dad in his last years.
A memorial service will be held in the Rader Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at 1:30 pm with Reverend Ben Bagley officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Kilgore, Texas.
