Alice was born on March 29, 1946 in Gregg County, Texas, she was the daughter of the late William Isaac and Mary Bess White. Alice attended Kilgore Jr. College and graduated from St Joseph’s School of Nursing in Fort Worth, Texas in 1967. While attending college, Alice met James C. Lucas Jr. and married him in 1967.

Upon graduation, James enlisted in the US Air Force and Alice worked as an RN at his state side duty stations which included: Ogden, UT and Denver, CO. When James was deployed overseas she went home and worked at Good Shephard Hospital in Longview. After James left the military she worked as a hospital nurse in Mineral Wells, Wichita Falls, and Houston. It was during this time that they welcomed the additions of Alan and LeAnn to their family.

After the birth of her children, Alice changed career directions to spend more time with her young family. She went back to school and graduated in 1982 from Midwestern State University with a Bachelor’s of Science, double majored in Earth/Life Sciences and Education. Alice was a dedicated teacher who loved her students. Over the course of her teaching career she taught hundreds of 5th and 6th graders courses ranging from Science, Math, and gifted/enrichment classes at schools in Wichita Falls, Alief ISD, and Pine Tree ISD until she retired in 2007 around the birth of her second grandchild. During her teaching career, Alice won numerous awards including the Walmart Teacher of the year. She is fondly remembered by her students and co-workers for making a difference in their lives.

Retirement did not slow Alice down. She enjoyed volunteering and running programs through Centre Presbyterian Church. Alice served as Christian Education Elder and enjoyed teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for the children of the church. She led the Women of the Church and organized Bible studies, potluck’s, prepared care baskets for members no longer able to attend church in person, drove church members to appointments, wrapped Christmas presents, where there was a need Alice fulfilled it. In addition, retirement allowed time for her beloved “Sister Trips” and “Summer Time Camp Grandma”.

She was preceded in death by her parents and also her brothers, Richard White, William Mack White, and Van Dean White, sister, Barbara Nell Sammons.

Alice is survived by her husband, James Cecil Lucas, Jr. of Longview; her children; son and daughter-in-law, Alan William and Julie Lucas of Pearland; daughter, LeAnn Elizabeth Lucas of Longview; grandchildren, William Lucas and Emily Lucas both of Pearland; sisters, Mary Lee Uhler and husband Jim of Longview, Peggy Bennett of Longview, and Nancy Ballard and husband Cyril of Gilmer.
