Leslie Matthews Guestbook

Jim and Glenda Cochran

Mr. Matthews was such a positive influence during my teen years. He was kind, understanding, firm in his beliefs and with a great sense of humor. There are many funny stories I can recall. He was an outstanding principal and superintendent at Vidor I.S.D. Everyone respected him tremendously. We are very saddened by his passing. Our prayers are with the family during this difficult time.

I will always remember Mr Matthews as the man that taught me to respect other people and their views. His ability to lead and his sense of humor made a for a great high school experience. Robert Cockrell, Class of 1962

Leslie and Joe: I have heartfelt feelings for you and your family. Having lost both parents several years ago, I understand the pain that you are feeling, but I also understand that God will take care of you and somehow we grow from these heart breaking experiences of death. Your dad was a wonderful person, and he touched many lives. He saved Vidor High School from despair, and he was quite influential in my life, giving me my first teaching position at VHS. I just retired last Wednesday after 42 years of teaching both high school and college, and I dedicate those years to your father because of his influence upon me, among hundreds of other young people. I share your grief and pain, but also some of your love and happiness because your and your family shared your dad with us all as we were reaching maturity. God bless you and your family.

My deepest, heart felt sympathy for the Matthews family. What a wonderful mentor and friend the world has lost and future generations will never know. In all my years of travel I have never met a man who left such a mark on everyone he touched. His dedication to the service of young people went far and above his responsibility. The impact he had on me has never been forgotten. My senior year I ran into emotional problems and at the time did not realize the implication of his actions. He called me into his office because my grades had dropped dramatically and it neve dawned on me that out of the hundreds of students he knew I was having problems. He also knew when I cut class and lovingly chastised me with a warning of telling my parents if I did it again which I never did. He is a model for every educator in this country to emulate. How proud and honored I am to have known him.

Although I graduated VHS in '58, I remember well hearing of the positive contributions Mr. Matthews made to my alma mater. His service in Dickinson ISD, my home from "84-'06, well documents his positive impact. Through his service to children, youth, and the field of education, he was respected and admired by many. We hope his touching thousands of lives and providing brighter futures as a result will provide comfort and peace to each member of the Matthews family. God bless and comfort you in your grief. Leslie and Joe, I remember hearing the contributions Mr. Matthews made to VISD following my graduation in '58. He left a legacy there as well as in Dickinson where I moved when I married my husband in '84. As difficult as it is to lose such an important person in your life, I pray you will be comforted knowing he touched thousands of lives and made the world better as a result. May God bless you with peace and comfort as you grieve his loss.
