CAROLE ANN CALLAWAY HUNTER

Services for Carole Ann Hunter, 74, of Kilgore, formerly of Athens will be 11:00 am, Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at the First Christian Church of Athens with Reverend Buddy Duggins and Reverend Kern Railsback officiating. Burial will follow in Shelby Chapel Cemetery, Athens, Texas. Mrs. Hunter passed away in Longview after a lengthy illness on August 13, 2017 at 2:20 p.m.

Carole was born in Athens, Texas on October 20, 1942 to Augustus (Gus) and Pauline Corley Callaway. She and her husband of 56 years, R. Neil Hunter, were married on June 1, 1961, at St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Athens. They were long-time members of First Christian Church in Athens. Caroleís connection to the church spans five generations.

Carole treasured large family gatherings especially during the holiday season. Additionally, she was interested in the historic preservation movement and the antebellum south, and this interest led her to become a champion for restoring and preserving many fine historic homes, first in Athens, then later in Louisiana and Central Texas. These homes became popular places to see on local historic homes tours, and Carole used her creative finesse particularly well for Christmas events. She was known for the fastidious hospitality and perfectly decorated interiors displayed in both the business endeavors she pursued as well as with gatherings of her and Neilís large circle of friends. People knew when she was the hostess that they were in for a top-notch, southern experience.

Carole is survived by her husband Neil Hunter; daughter, Shannon (Steven) Harris of Austin; son Todd (Sherri) Hunter of Kilgore; a sister, Sally (Carl) Frentress of Athens; brother, Jeff (Chellye) Callaway of Kilgore; a sister-in-law, Lorelei Garratt of Dallas; four grandchildren, Joshua Harris of Austin, Ross (Alicia) Harris of Littleton, Colorado, Kylee and Kiefer Hunter of Kilgore and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother.

The family will receive friends at Rader Funeral Home of Kilgore Tuesday evening between 6:00-7:00 pm. The family will also receive friends 10:00 am, Wednesday morning at the First Christian Church of Athens.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Henderson County Humane Society, Forest Home Baptist Church of Kilgore or the First Christian Church of Athens.
