Graveside services for Clara Nita Mashburn Carter of Kilgore will take place at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at Hickory Grove Cemetery with Rev. David Hampton officiating. Clara Nita Mashburn Carter passed away peacefully on October 23, 2017, after a brief illness.

She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to the late Juanita (née Boulware) Mashburn and Frank Cauthon Mashburn. Her mother later married Lowell Burton. Clara spent most of her youth in Beaumont, Texas. She graduated from Midwestern University, Wichita Falls, Texas, after attending Baylor University in Waco where she met her husband, Douglas Carter, who was from Graham, Texas. They were married for 64 years and Clara taught English Literature at high schools in Holliday, Vidor, and Beaumont, Texas. She retired from teaching in 1969, when her husband was transferred to Dallas. Clara enjoyed life and creativity. Her hobbies were reading her Bible, sewing, and writing notes and letters to her many friends. Clara used her sewing skills to make Vacation Bible School quilts and the altar covering for Crossroads United Methodist Church. She had taught Sunday School class at First Baptist Church in Kilgore, Texas, and had participated in a book discussion group at Kilgore Public Library for many years.

She is survived by her son, Barry; daughter-in-law, Sue; two grandchildren, Douglas and Caroline; and, several cousins.
