Services for John Edward Welch, Sr., 84, of New London will be 10:00 am, Friday, September 7, 2012 at the Rader Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Donny Sadler officiating. Burial will be in Rusk County Memorial Gardens. Mr. Welch passed away Monday, September 3, 2012 in Longview.
John was born January 15, 1928 in Luling, Texas to the late George Robert and Clara Belle Welch. As a young man John had fond childhood memories growing up in Luling, Texas with his cousin Roy. They were always getting into mischief and later both joined the marines together. He proudly served 8 years in the service where some of his first duties were recovery and clean up at Pearl Harbor, and later guarding Japanese prisoners of war. John met his wife Mary in a Houston hospital where she was a nurse, while he was recovering from a chemical plant accident. Mr. Welch was a hardworking man that put his family above everything else. A mechanic by trade, he taught his sons his skills and loved working and rebuilding trucks with them. He also enjoyed watching them play football at their school. He taught John and George how to ride dirt bikes at the age of 8. John loved spending time with his little girl Patricia, before she passed away from illness at the age of 4. Mr. Welch enjoyed spending time with his grandson, Kade. They would enjoy fishing trips together, spending school lunches with him and helped mold him into the young man he is today.
Mr. Welch is survived by his two sons, John E. Welch Jr., George Robert Welch and daughter in law Tina Welch of New London; sister-in-law Sherrie Deason of Houston; brother-in-law, Max D. Harding of Longview; two grandchildren Kade Evans of Kilgore, and Dustin Horne of Dallas; nephews and nieces Sara Harris and Gail Buchanan of Beckville; Max Harding Jr. and Susan Palmer of Longview; Lisa Holmes of Friendswood; Rebecca Harding of Dallas; Monica Plant, Velissa Parmer and Andrea Carmona of Houston; Jessica Cantu of Cypress and numerous friends as well.
John is preceded in death by his loving wife of 41 years Mary Michelle Welch. Her passing just two months ago in June broke his heart and spirit and he is now reunited with her and his precious daughter, Patricia Lynn Welch.
He is also preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Mae Welch Carley and Edith Welch Fogle; three brothers, Robert Welch, George Arnold Welch and Louie Welch.
The family will receive friends Thursday, September 6, 2012, at Rader Funeral Home from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.
